For Everything That Didn't Work Out: MOP!'s “WHAT SHOULD'VE BEEN”
How to listen: bedroom ceiling stares, 2 AM overthinking, rainy afternoons, unsent texts
“WHAT SHOULD’VE BEEN” is for anyone who’s ever caught themselves romanticizing a situation that probably would've messed them up anyway. You know the drill. Replaying old conversations at 2 AM, making up scenarios in your head, wondering if things would've worked out if you'd just done one thing differently. It's embarrassing how much time we can spend mourning a version of our lives that never even happened.
But MOP! takes that feeling a step further by drawing from La La Land and its similarities to a previous relationship, even recreating the film's lighthouse café scene for the cover art. The idea of questioning whether you were genuinely part of someone's story or just playing a role in their reenactment of a favorite film is a pretty brutal thought. Imagine looking back at a relationship and wondering if you were ever really you to that person, or if you were just filling a part they'd already written in their head.
No pretending you're completely over it, no acting like you've got your life figured out. Just you and the endless possibilities your brain refuses to shut up about. MOP! taps into that very specific kind of frustration, where you know you need to move on, but some stubborn part of you still wants to know how the story would've ended. And honestly, fair enough. Sometimes you miss the person, sometimes you miss who you were back then, and sometimes you're just pissed that things didn't turn out the way you pictured them. It is what it is, but that doesn't mean it doesn't sting.
